October Activities

On Thursday 4th we are going on a day outing to Paarl Settling Ponds and Reserve.  We meet at 08:00 at the Onrus Trading Post to consolidate transport.    Please bring along a mid-morning snack.

A lucky group of members are camping at Wolfkop near Citrusdal from 9 – 11 October, under leadership of Keith Brooke-Sumner, while Craig takes a well-deserved break in the UK.

In acknowledgement of African Penguin Awareness Day on October 13th, HBC donated R500.00 to SANCCOB for the rehabilitation and release of one penguin, which we requested they name Hermanus!

Wednesday 17th it’s time for our monthly meeting again and very well timed, Cuan McGeorge will share with us his work and experiences at the Stony Point Penguin colony at Betty’s Bay. The meeting is at 20:00 at Fernkloof and visitors are welcome to join us.  The usual tea and coffee will be served afterwards.

Please make a note of our annual End-of-Year function on Thursday 6th December.  As usual we will have our yearly Photographic competition that evening so get your unusual, funny and beautiful bird photos ready.  Details to follow in due course.

A BirdLife South Africa event you might want to support is the annual Save Our Seabirds Festival in Cape Town from 8 to 14 October. For more details and the full programme, see  http://www.birdlife.org.za/events/sos-festival

DON’T FORGET our evening meeting this Wednesday 26th September at 20:00 with Gavin & Cynthia Turner presenting ‘Tanzania – the lesser known Parks’. The Turners’ presentations are always of a very high standard and not to be missed.

And finally, you might be interested in the programme for the annual Stanford Bird Fair which takes place from 28 – 30 September.  For information visit their website http://www.stanfordbirding.co.za/stanford-bird-fair

A group of 20 HBC members spent two glorious days (and cold nights) at Leeuwenboschfontein farm.    We enjoyed birding on the farm and also did the Bloutoring loop which was very productive.  Sightings of species not found in our area included Booted Eagle, Southern Black Korhaan, Ant-Eating Chat and Namaqua Warbler.

Thanks to Craig for organizing yet another very successful & enjoyable outing!
