A near record 100 members celebrated Hermanus Bird Club’s 15th year at the end of year function and were entertained with highlights from each of the past chairmen’s tenures.
Alan & Carol McLennan-Smith arrived in Hermanus to find no bird club existed here. They placed and advert in the Hermanus Times and had two responses, from John Davies and Dave Lundy. Soon 14 enthusiastic members formed the nucleus of the club. Alan fondly remembers one of the first presentations by the late Nico Myburgh who subsequently became an Honorary Member of the Club. At present Alan & Carol are honorary members of HBC.
Next up was Mike Ford who had us in stitches sharing funny stories in his inimitable way. Mike reminisced about the start of activities like Mini-Birding-Big-Day and Mini-Mini-Birding-Big-Day as well as the Western Cape Challenge. Honorary membership was bestowed on Mike for his dedication to Hermanus Bird Club, for always being willing to help with projects, generously sharing his vast knowledge, be it at courses which he presents at very low cost to members, or out in the field helping with identification. Valerie shares in Mike’s honorary status.
Next up was John Bowman, third chairman of the club. Under John’s leadership the heronry was built on the Vermont Pan , many work parties were held trying to keep the access to the hide on the Kleinriver accessible and on-going courses were organized for members.
Current chairperson Barbara Palmer welcomed members, mentioned members who served on the committee since 2009, thanked the present committee for their hard work and dedication and announced a new challenge for 2013, named ‘Berg to Breede’ which will run for the first 6 months of the year
