We are delighted to announce that Mike Ford has agreed to run his popular beginners course for members at the Fernkloof Hall on the 11th & 12th March 2014. The course will be from 09:00 to 12:00 on both days and refreshments will be served at tea-time.
The cost is R100.00 per member and includes course notes.

Thursday 6th – meet at Fernkloof at 07:00 to consolidate transport for a day outing to De Mond Nature Reserve led by member Chris Cheetham.
Birding is excellent at De Mond at the moment so don’t miss this outing. Bring along binoculars & a scope if you have, sunhat, refreshments, swimming costume, petrol contribution, Wild Card or R40 entrance fee.
Wednesday 12th to Friday 14th – outing to de Hoop, fully booked.
Wednesday 19th – Evening meeting at Fernkloof at 19:00. Member Charles Naudé’s presentation is titled ‘Birds I View’. Charles will show us a selection of his favourite and amazing bird photos.
BirdLife SA reports that Bronwyn Maree has won the prestigious Future for Nature Award 2014! This is an international, competitive award for young conservationists and Bronwyn, one of three winners, was chosen from a total of 126 applications from 58 countries. In addition to international recognition, this award carries a purse of €50 000 for each winner. Bronwyn leads the acclaimed Albatross Task Force of BirdLife South Africa, undertaking work to prevent unnecessary deaths of seabirds during fishing operations. Congratulations Bronwyn on a well-deserved award!

Here’s a list of birding activities you can start your new year with:
Firstly, there is our 2014 IBA Challenge which runs from 1st January to 30 April and has so far attracted more than 20 entrants. If you want to participate, please let me know and I’ll send details.
Wednesday 15 January at 19:00 is our first evening meeting for the year, with Mike Ford sharing his Turkey bird ringing experiences with us. The title of the presentation is ‘Another Slice of Turkey’ – maybe some left over from Christmas? Our January meetings are always well attended and Mike Ford is an excellent speaker, so do come early to get a seat!
Thursday 16th & Friday 17th at 18:00 two groups will enjoy cruising on the African Queen. There are TWO places available for the Friday evening. Please contact me if you want to join a group of excellent birders!
Looking further ahead, on Thursday 6th February we have a day outing to De Mond, meeting at Fernkloof at 07:00 and from 12 to 14 February a group of 24 members are booked for the De Hoop outing. Charles Naudé will share his amazing photos with us at our evening meeting on the 19th.
Two very important dates to diarize for March are our annual Mini-birding-Big Day on the 2nd and our AGM on the 19th.
