Oystercatcher ends year on sad note

When the group of 20 Club members arrived at the West Coast National Park, the pair of South African Shelducks at a water hole still had at least seven chicks. Two days later all but three had been carried off by Kelp Gulls, probably to feed their own offspring.

Witnessing this rather sad fate of the ducklings was one of the memorable experiences on the bird-watching trip from 12 to 15 October, during which 139 species were listed.

Read all about that and much more in the last Oystercatcher of 2014, by clicking on the link above.
