Will we find the often elusive Cape Rockjumper at Rooi Els this time?
The first Club morning outing of the year will be to Rooi Els, Stony Point, Harold Porter and Rooisand on Thursday 5 February.
One special bird species that can be guaranteed to be there, is the African Penguin at Stony Point. Other special birds to look out for include the Ground Woodpecker, Sentinel Rock-Thrush, Bank Cormorant, Blue-mantled Flycatcher, Victorin’s Warbler and Hottentot Buttonquail.
We depart from Onrust Trading Post at 07:30 after consolidating transport. Bring along a snack and water. Visitors are welcome. Contact person: Craig Holmes at 083 227 9003.
The plight of the penguins and other seabirds – and the wonderful work done to rescue and rehabilitate them – will be explained at Hermanus Bird Club’s first meeting of 2015. The meeting will be addressed by Margaret Roestorf, executive director of Sanccob.
A group of Club members saw Sanccob in action in Cape Town last year and thought the story needed to be told to a bigger audience.
The meeting will be at Fernkloof Hall on Wednesday 21 January and will begin at 19:00, with tea or coffee and biscuits afterwards. Visitors are welcome.
The annual Mini Birding Big Day will take place on Sunday 15th March 2015 between 06:00 and 18:00.
This competition is open to all members of Hermanus Bird Club and immediate family. Teams must consist of four people but teams of three may be accepted at the organizer’s discretion. The object is to identify as many species of wild, freely moving South African bird species as possible within the 12 hours and within the designated area surrounding Hermanus.
The usual bring-your-own braai will be held for entrants and their partners at Fernkloof Hall around 18:30 after the day’s birding.
Teams wishing to enter must do so during the last week of February. A map, rules and check list will be sent to entrants early in March. Please diarise the event and start getting your team together.
