About the Club

General

Hermanus Bird Club was started in 1997 by 19 members of whom more than half are still active in the Club. Twenty years later the membership is more than 200 strong.

We are a vibrant club, offering our members regular walks, away outings and monthly evening meetings which are addressed by well-known birders who have travelled far and wide.

Regular bird identification and other courses are offered and our grey matter is taxed in our annual quiz evening.

Our evening meetings are normally held on the 3rd Wednesday of the month in the hall in Fernkloof Nature Reserve. Meetings start at 19:00 from September to April, and at 18:00 from May to August.

Visitors are welcome.

We have a morning walk on the first Thursday of the month, sometimes close to home, sometimes further afield. We usually meet at a central point to consolidate transport.

The club is represented on the Western Cape Birding Forum and the Kleinrivier Estuary Forum. We regularly take part in the Coordinated Waterbird Counts (CWAC) and the Coordinated Avifaunal Roadcounts (CAR) of the Animal Demography Unit of the University of Cape Town.

  1. How about listing tour committee and notifying potential new members how to join and providing the name and whereabouts of your meeting venue and the meeting times and days?

    • I agree with roncorylus. I want to join the club but could not find the option on the website.

      • Cynthia I am just an ordinary member, not on the committee and only saw your comments today. Under ‘Contact us’ you will find the name and contact details of the membership secretary and under ‘information’ it tells you when and where the club’s monthly meetings are held.

    • I would like to deposit membership fees into your account as soon as possible 😭Am so sorry to miss out this week!!
Please send banking details asap. I really don’t want to miss out next month – the Highlands Road outing was so enjoyable!
I did not manage to find this site before and I sent an incorrect e-mail address ie. pppitlo@iafrica.com7.
      Sincerely,
      Mariette Pitlo

  2. We drove from Kenton-0n-Sea to de Kelders on 29 December 2015 and I saw at least 4 pairs of Blue Cranes with chicks. It appeared that two groups had 3 or 4 chicks and the others had 2 each (as we flashed past in the car). Joan Boshard
